Louisa Co VA Deed Records
I have made notes in blue italics regarding the some of the individuals named in these documents.

Book: A, Page: 45, Grantor: Dumas, Benjamin, Grantee: Garland, Peter & Rubert, Date: 14-Mar-1742
[no abstract]
Book: A, Page: ?, Grantor: Archelaus Yancey, Grantee: Samuel Dodman, Date: 16-Jun-1749

Sig. Archelaus Yancey. Wit: Thomas Paulet, Richard Bullock, John Longan, John Bickley.. 25 Jul 1749 Acknowledged by Archelaus Yancey. Mary, his wife, relinquished right of dower.
Note: I believe that this Richard Bullock is the son of Edward b 16 Apr 1670 and Sara, and a brother to our Edward who married Ann Anderson.  The Yancey name fascinates me – Yancey is named as business partner in Hannah Clark Bullock’s will.
Book: A, Page: 375, Grantor: Benjamin Brown and Sarah, his wife, Grantee: John Snelson, Date: 1750 Benjamin Brown and Sarah, his wife, of Fredericksville Par., Louisa co. Lease and release Lb. 55 currt. money 200 acres in Snelson's actual possession...bounded by James Nuckolls, John Cosby, Richard Yancey and Edward Bullock.
Note: I believe this could be either Edward b 1670 who did not die until 1756 or his son Edward 1703 who was married to Ann Anderson.  I suspect, however that it is the younger.

Note: Here again, Edward is mentioned, and we know that Edward b 1670 has died, so it is his sons Richard Henley Bullock and Edward listed here.
Book: B, Page: 325, Grantor: Thomas Poindexter and Sarah his wife, Grantee: John Bullock, Date: 27-Aug-1759
Thomas Poindexter and Sarah his wife of Parish of Fredericksville, Louisa county to John Bullock of same 25 pounds current money for tract in Fredericksville containing by estimation 81 acres. Thomas Poindxter, Sarah Poindexter (x), no witnesses. Rec. 28 Aug 1759.
Note: I believe this John is another son of Edward b 1670 and Sarah.  John b abt 1700 married Catherine Lewis.
Book: C1/2, Page: 170, Grantor: William Cosby, Grantee: John Wingfield, Date: 01-Aug-1766
William Cosby of Louisa Co. to John Wingfield of Hanover Co. and James Bullock of Louisa Co. William Cosby is seised and possessed of the lands and slaves and other estate which he cannot manage to advantage and by that means he is now indebted to sundry persons so to provide as well for Cosby and his family and making provisions for his wife and children at his death he has agreed to settle his estate and commit the management to the said Wingfield and Bullock for 5 shillings doth grant to them 1200 acres on both sides of the north fork of Little River and Negro salves, goods and chattels. Negro Jamey, Jolly, Peter, Matt, Bartelott, Will, Charles, Tamar, Milly and children, Beck, Dinah, horses, cattle, sheep, hoggs and all household goods. during the life of William Cosby for the maintenance of him and his family and at his death if his present wife survives him to use of sd. wife and all the children which the sd. Cosby may leave at his death equally to be divided to them. If the present wife shall not survive him then to the children. Sig. William Cosby. wit. George Lumsden, John Watkins, Jr.
Note:  James Bullock was a son of Edward Bullock and Ann Anderson, b 23 Feb 1735 in Hanover Co VA and m in 1765 to Rebecca Wingfield.  Agnes, sister of Rebecca married Edmund Bullock (Edward) brother of James, (also a brother of John m. Anne Rice).  Two more Wingfield sister, Elizabeth, married Charles Scott Cosby, and Susannah Wingfield married John Cosby.  There is a familial relationship with the Nuckolls line also, but not for our particular line…I think, anyway.
Book: D1/2, Page: 166, Grantor: William Thomson, Grantee: John Sanders, Date: 10-Nov-1769
William Thomson of St. Martins Par., Hanover Co., merchant and Margret his wife to John Sanders of Henrico Co. #75, for 275 acres in Trinity Par, said tract was by Ann Bullock and chars. Bullock. conveyed to William Thomson 26 Aug 1760 ... Thomas Shelton's corner. Sig. William Thomasson and Margarett his wife.
Note:  I believe this is Ann Anderson Bullock, the widow of Edward, died abt 1756 in Hanover Co, OH, and his heirs.
Book: D1/2, Page: 330, Grantor: Benja. Cook, Grantee: Jno. Bullock, Date: 11-Nov-1771
Benja. Cook of Trinity Par. Louisa Co. and Effey his wife to Jno. Bullock of same £20 for 149 acres adj. Zach. Colleys, William Shelton, James Terry, Story Hall and the south fork of the Rocky branch near the road. Sig. Benjamin Cook and Effy Cook.
Book: D, Page: 104, Grantor: Charles Smith, Grantee: John Bullock, Date: 13-Dec-1773
Charles Smith of Trinity Parish, Louisa County to John Bullock of same 200 pounds tract on South side of Little River containing by estimation 238 acres. Beg. at Little River a little above Goodwins Mill Dam S 42 degrees W to S 42 degrees W 12 poles to S 47 degrees E 20 poles to S 18 degrees W 25 poles to 53 degrees E 9 poles to S 10 degrees E 16 poles to S 6 degrees E 17 poles to S 70 degrees W 11 poles to 28 degrees W to Rev. Robert Yancey's line along his line to corner in James Terry's line, along Terry's to corner in Robert Goodwin line along line to Little River to down River to Beginning including buildings etc. Sig. Charles Smith and Dorothea Smith. Rec. 13 Dec 1773
Note:  This particular line presents some questions.  There is a David Bullock b abt 1761 who married Jane Terry dau of James Terry and Henrietta.  Jane Terry and David Bullock were born in Feb 1782 in Louisa County, VA and died 30 Jul 1838, Jane died abt 1840 still in Louisa Co.  They had a daughter, Martha “Patsy” who married James  Duke Nuckolls, a daughter Sarah who married Nicholas Merriwether Anderson, and a daughter Maria, who married William B. Sims. Because of this Terry connection to the wrong David (a David I cannot place at this time) I thought all of the Terry references were to another line of Bullocks, however, I now think this could be wrong.  We also find Nuckolls witnessing John Bullock’s will (one of the documents you sent).
Book: E, Page: 314, Grantor: Thomas Shelton and Ann his wife, Grantee: Nelson Anderson, Jr., Date: 09-Nov-1778
Thomas Shelton and Ann his wife of Trinity Par. Louisa Co. to Nelson Anderson, Jr. of St. Pauls Par., Hanover co. 400 acres on Long Creek adj. John Walton, Robert Harris, Charles Nuckolls, dec'd., Charles Colley, John Bullock, Francis Lipscomb, Edmond Beadles and John Sanders.
Book: E, Page: 314, Grantor: Thomas Shelton and Ann his wife, Grantee: Nelson Anderson, Jr., Date: 09-Nov-1778

Book: H, Page: 93, Grantor: William Shelton and Mary, his wife, Grantee: Richard Anderson, Date: 19-Nov-1779
William Shelton and Mary, his wife, of Louisa to Richard Anderson of same £295 on Rockey Branch by survey of William Pettit containing 1521/2 acres, 70 acres of which William Shelton bought of Benjamin Cook and 82 1/6 acres he bought of Vincent Tullock adjoining Capt. Nathaniel Pope, John Bullock, James Terry, Charles Colley, Kezeah Nuckolls with appurtenances. Sig. William Shelton and Mary (x) Shelton. wit. Robert Goodwin, Thomas Davis, Cyrus Davis, Robert Wilson.
Book: G, Page: 297, Grantor: Christopher Smith, Grantee: John Bullock, Date: 23-Mar-1784
Christopher Smith of Louisa to John Bullock of same 300 pounds current money 13 acres on both sides of Little River adjoining Mill known as Goodwin's Mill and one moiety of said Mill with appurtenances, etc. Sig. Christopher Smith. wit. David Bullock, William Pope, Ro. Bullock. Rec. 9 Aug 1784.
Note: Here we have a John Bullock buying a share in the Goodwin’s Mill.  John Bullock who married Ann Rice died in 1780, and this is most likely him, as this could be the mill that is mentioned in his will.  It could be his son John, but we find him marrying Elizabeth Railey and moving to Kentucky before 1790.  Edward Bullock and Agnes Wingfield had a son John b 1770, so he would be too young for this purchase.  Richard Bullock, b 1670 had a son John b abt 1700.  He also would have been awfully old. This could be a sibling to David who married Jane Terry – I just don’t know how he fits or if he has siblings. I think our John is the best bet even in his advanced years
Book: F, Page: 547, Grantor: Lewis Bullock, Grantee: David Bullock, Date: 01-Apr-1788
Lewis Bullock of Louisa to David Bullock of same £280 land on waters of Little River in Louisa being land devised to sd. Lewis Bullock by his father adj. Robert Goodwin, James Terry, dec'd., Robert Yancey, Dec;d., Temperance Hix, Byrus Davis, and Robert Garland, one moiety of the mill known by the name of Goodwins mill reserving unto my mother, Anne Bullock, the use of said half of the mill and 50 acres adjoining same agreeable to my father's will which leaves the sd. mill and land during life to her and after her death to sd. Lewis Bullock. Sig. Lewis Bullock
This deed gives me fits.  I feel sure that the Lewis listed above is the brother of our Edward who married Hannah Clark.  Lewis was born 24 Feb 1764, and he married Mary Chinn in 1790.  We know he migrated to KY, and we find him in Fayette Co in 1790.  Lewis is a son of John Bullock and Anne Rice, and we find the life estate mentioned here in John Bullock’s will which you sent to me.  The part I can’t quite figure out is the relationship with the Terry line. This David is a resident of Louisa County in 1788, and could be the brother of Lewis, who was born in 1759.

Bullocks listed in KY in 1790
Bullock, Edmond Fayette 1/11/1790  I think this is most likely our Edward (married Hannah)son of John and AnnRice.  We know he died in 1832, or it might be Edmund/Edmond P. Bullock the son of Edward Bullock and Agnes Wingfield born abt 1763 who eventually married Elizabeth Fontaine.
Bullock, Garlind Fayette 1/11/1790 This is Garland, son of Edward Bullock and Agnes Wingfield born abt 1768
Bullook, James Fayette 1/11/1790 This is James who is a brother to our John(m Ann Rice) b 23 Feb 1735 and d 29 Jun 1813 in Fayette Co, KY, married to Rebecca Wingfield, the father of Thomas, and also Waller, whom we find in several of the KY records.
Bullook, Lewis Fayette 3/19/1790 This is the Lewis listed in the Louisa Co deed above b 1764 and married to Mary   Chinn.  Lewis is the father of the males listed as the five nephews of David Bullock in one of the deeds you sent
Bullock, Maple Fayette 1/11/1790 I can’t place this one.  I suspect that Maple is the wrong name.  It might be Micajah, however Edward’s son Micajah migrated to NC with his wife’s family .
Bullock, Nathaniel Fayette 1/11/1790 I have several Nathaniels, but they are either too old or too young so I’m not sure who this is.
Bullock, Thomas Fayette 1/11/1790 ThisThomas b 7 SEP 1766, is a son of James and Rebecca Wingfield who died in Woodford Co in 1841. Thomas married Lucy Redd 25 Dec 1790.
We know of several other Bullock families who migrated to KY, but they were not in the list Ancestry gave for 1790.  Since this is a recapped list it is possible that there are lost records or it is possible that these families arrived after 1790, but before 1800.

Book: G, Page: 99, Grantor: Elizabeth Paulett and David Paulett, Grantee: David Anderson Jr., Date: 16-Feb-1790
Elizabeth Paulett and David Paulett her son of Louisa to David Anderson Jr. of Hanover Co. in consideration of one mulatto woman named Lucy and her daughter Cecelia for one tract of land in Louisa adjoining North East Creek where Venables road crosses, Col. Wm. Phillips, sd. Paulett, Matthew Anderson, Pamunka River with houses, orchards, etc. Sig. Elizabeth (X) Paulett, David Paulett. wit. David Bullock Jr., Joseph Kimbrough, Robert Thomson.
I understand that the addition of Jr., does not necessarily mean that this is a son of a David Bullock, but only means that there is an older and a younger David living in the same area – one might be a nephew rather than a son.  In this case, I’m guessing that the elder David (b 1759) is the one son of John Bullock and Anne Rice, and an attorney, the other I believe is the one (b 1761)who married Jane Terry, but that is pure speculation.
Book: G, Page: 310, Grantor: Thomas Price and Barbara his wife, Grantee: Nathan Talley, Date: 17-Jan-1793

I believe this is the first reference to David Bullock’s wife, or to David Bullock being from Richmond.  David married Catherine Roy, dau of Mungo Roy and Catherine Micou.  The Roy Family Bible lists Mungo Roy b: 36 Mar 1742 d: 16 Sep 1815 m: 29 Apr 1766 to Catherine Micou b: 19 Jan 1746 d: 10 May 1820 at Locust Hill (her residence) in Caroline Co, VA.  Catherine (their second dau.) b:24 Feb 1778 d: May 1850 m: David Bullock, Esq. of Richmond.    I suspect then that this is evidence that the David who remains in VA and is an attorney married to Catherine, is the son of John and Ann, and brother of our Edward, and therefore, uncle to the children …etc. There seems to be no record of children for this family which is no doubt why he left his vast holdings divided amongst the nieces and nephews.
Book: p, Page: 279, Grantor: William F. Toler and Mary his wife, Grantee: Samuel A. Sale, Date: 10-Feb-1821
William F. Toler and Mary his wife of Louisa to Samuel A. Sale of Louisa $250. land on east side of road leading from Bullock's Mill to Marshall's old store, containing 32 acres adjoining said Sale in right of his wife, George Suanders, toler's Dedman's tract being same land purchased by Toler from David Bullock. Sig. William F. Toler and Mary W. Toelr. Wit. Fred Harris and James C. Dickinson.
I also believe that the references to David still in Louisa County, and not a lawyer, is most likely the David who married Jane Terry.
Book: p, Page: 368, Grantor: Sep 1821 William Johnson and Ann his wife of Louis, Grantee: , Date: 15-Sep-1821

I’m not sure about this Edmund either.  Edward maried to Agnes Wingfield, has died in 1786, Edward married to Hannah Clark has migrated to KY, so I am unable to say for certainly who this is.
Book: Q, Page: 491, Grantor: David Bullock and Catharine W. his wife, Grantee: Anna R. Garland, Clara S. Garland, Amand, Date: 24-Aug-1825
David Bullock and Catharine W. his wife of the city of Richmond to Anna R. Garland, Clara S. Garland, Amanda Melvina Garland and Rebecca C. Garland of Louisa, for love and affection David Bullock has for his nieces. All of tract of land deeded David Bullock by Edmd. Randolph under decree of high Court of Chancery 12 Nov 1800 which lies west of a road called Michaels Road except 25 acres heretofore deeded to {blank} Bunch, containing by estimation 556 1/2 acres., being part of a tract of 800 acres conveyed by John Winston to John H. Norton rec. 11 Jun 1796 and by deed recorded 10 Nov 1800 conveyed by Edmond Randolph by virtue of a decree of chancery Court to David Bullock. Sig. David Bullock and Catharine W. Bullock. Rec. 17 Dec 1825.
This is quite interesting – you sent me a deed from this David and Catharine to five nephews, well, here is one to his nieces.  I have not done enough work on the Garland line to be sure how this fits.  Elizabeth, dau of John Bullock and Ann Rice, married Robert Garland.  There is some controversy as to whether Elizabeth or Rebecca was married to Robert Garland, but I believe that Rebecca born 17 Jan 1773 and Nancy Ann born 21 Nov 1777 never married and that they are the two mentioned in the following document.  They are the two youngest daughters of John Bullock and Ann Rice.    The 1850 VA Census Louisa Co in household 183 we find a Robert Garland age 83 Farmer $6300 born in VA.  In Household 344/344 lists Miss Clara S. Garland age 50 born in VA; Miss Malvina Garland age 48; and Miss Rebecca C. Garland age 40.  Catharine, aged 72, the widow of David is living in household 321—Valued at $50,000. In 1860 she has died, and we have in household 110 a Robert Garland aged 93 Farmer $2636 born in Louisa Co, VA, and next door in household 111 we have Clara S. Garland, aged 59, landlady, $24,000/$47,772 born in Louisa Co, VA; Malvina Garland, aged 59, Domicile, born in Louisa Co, VA; Rebecca C. Garland, aged 49, Domicile, $3600,  born in Louisa Co, VA; and John Nuckolls aged 24 overseer $100, born Louisa Co, VA.
Book: R, Page: 204, Grantor: David Bullock and Catharine his wife, Grantee: Rebecca Bullock and Ann Bullock, Date: 28-Sep-1827
David Bullock and Catharine his wife of City of Richmond to Rebecca Bullock and Ann Bullock of Louisa for $1 and love and affection a tract on which Rebecca and Ann now reside on south fork of Little River containing (blank) acres including land bequeathed to David Bullock by his father John Bullock and what he purchased of the Popes tract. Sig. David Bullock, Catharine M. Bullock. Memo: It was agreed between Frederick Harris in right of his wife and David Bullock that the South Fork of Little River as it now runs be considered boundary tracts between land conveyed and tract owned by Frederick Harris 28 Sep 1827.
I believe that Rebecca and Ann are the two youngest children of John Bullock and Ann Rice.  Rebecca was born 1773.

According to a reference material that discusses the law in the 17th & 18th centuries, women could only own title to property if they were widowed or single.  Since these two women definitely are transfering property it seems to indicate they are definitely single.

Smith 22 Mar 1864 [This deed was lost an recorded in DB GG p 52]
I can find no Granville Bullock in our line, however, I find him referenced several times in Louisa County, and also mentioned in a family history of James Duke Nuckolls, who married Martha “Patsy” Bullock, daughter of David Bullock and Jane Terry.  Also: July 22, 1842; Mordicai J. Nuckolls marries Caroline M. Hunter; Parents William Hunter Dec'd Father, Granville Bullock Witness  I believe that Granville is most likely a sibling of the David Bullock who married Jane Terry, but I still cannot place them.
Book: 3, Page: 285, Grantor: Clara S. Garland, Grantee: Elvira Watson, Thomas Watson, Clarence W, Date: 21-Aug-1876
Clara S. Garland to Elvira Watson, Thomas Watson, Clarence Watson and Major Watson of 2nd part and Rebecca Smith and heirs of her body of 3rd part, Jane Price and Julian Price of 4th part, Mary Harris and heirs of her body 5th part, etc.[ copied]
This reads more like a will than a deed, and I wonder if these are “bequests” of Clara S. Garland, one of the nieces of David Bullock and Katherine from Richmond.

The Garlands all seem to have married cousins.  None of this is my research, and I have not confirmed any of the data, but from the best I can tell…John Garland,( son of Edward Garland, b abt 1700 New Kent Co, VA and Elizabeth ?) married a Mary Bullock (I don’t know what line she is from)and had eight children: Peter b 23 Jan 1745/46; Edward; Robert; John; Lucy; James b abt 1722 Hanover Co, VA; Thomas b abt 1732; and William b abt 1746.  Peter, a Rev War vet married Martha Garland 12 MAR 1767 in Lunenburg County, Virginia and had at least four sons. Robert married Rebecca Bullock and had six children: Charles; Robert; Judith; Henrietta; Sarah b 30 Oct 1752; and Mary b 20 Mar 1755 in Louisa Co, VA .  This last Robert, married Elizabeth Bullock 9 Feb 1795.  I believe that this Elizabeth Bullock is the daughter of John Bullock and Ann Rice, and a sister to the David I believe is the David and Catherine referred to in the Louis Co documents as being from Richmond.  I suspect that the neices listed in the Deed referrenced earlier, are the children of this Robert Garland and Elizabeth Bullock.  The Rebecca Bullock, mother of this Robert, I believe must be from another line, at least I can’t place her at this time.

I think we can safely conclude that there is a connection to our line prior to the marriage of Robert and Elizabeth, however, because Edward Bullock and Agnes Wingfield named their son Garland Bullock…was Agnes Wingfield’s mother a Garland???
