Bullock, John (b. Abt 1730, d. Aft MAR 1794)
Note: Name: John BULLOCK
Given Name: John
Surname: Bullock
Sex: M
Death: 1785 in ,Louisa, VA
Change Date: 13 Jun 2000
Note:
The following notes were provided by Mary Browder who "got them from my Uncle Gus (Alonzo Augustus Donoho) who received them from Estella Bullock in 1947."

Bullock Family Notes

John Bullock married Ann Rice in 1755 in Louisa County VA. He died there in 1785. Ann Rice Bullock died in Louisa County, Virginia, July 9th 1820.

Edward Bullock the sixth son of John and Ann Rice Bullock was an early settler of Mercer County, Ky., and was the founder of Perryville; then, in that county. Edward Bullock, according to one of the early histories of Kentucky once lived in Culpepper County, Virginia, for there his son Edward Isaac was born; but by 1815 he was living in Mercer Co. Ky., and he was still there when he with his mother and brothers, and sisters joined in a deed of settlement of the estate of his brother Rice Bullock. Edward Bullock however was born in Louisa County, Virginia, June 6th, 1768. He married, date and place unknown to the writer, Hannah Clark, daughter of Robert Clark and Susanna Henderson, who lived in Louisa County, Virginia, Albemarle County, Virginia, Bedford County, Virginia, Campbell County, Virginia and who died in Clark County, Kentucky. He mentions his daughter Hannah Bullock in his will. I understand that Edward Bullock moved to Green County later and afterwards to Barren County, Kentucky where they lived and died and were buried. The farm on which they lived in Barren County on Skaggs Creek was conveyed to them by David Bullock, a brother of Edward who lived in Richmond Virginia. The will of Hannah Clark Bullock, who survived her husband is recorded in the clerk's office of Barren County at Glasgow Kentucky.

The children of Edward and Hannah Clark Bullock were as follows:

Fanny Paulina married Thomas Hargrove in Mercer County, Kentucky, 28 Sept 1815.
Judith married Thomas Moss in Mercer County, Kentucky.
Harriet married Bigger
Catherine Ray married John Wood Bell in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1832
Mary (Polly) married Rhea
Louisa married Crockett, a relative of David Crockett.
Hannah Rebecca married Joseph A. Moss in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1835
John Waller Bullock married Minerva Glover in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1833.
Edward Isaac Bullock married Maria Emerson.
David Bullock married Jane Tunstall in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1838.
Robert Lewis Bullock never married.
Edward Bullock the father of the above children was himself the son of John Bullock of Louisa County, Virginia. John Bullock was a member of the Louisa County Committee of Safety during the Revolutionary War, and consequently all his female descendants are eligible to the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. He was probably born in Hanover County, Virginia, as there was no Louisa County until several years after his birth. He married Ann Rice who was probably a sister of his sister Mary's husband, Hezekiah Rice. Rice genealogical articles are a little confused as to who they were.
According to a John Bullock bible record the marriage took place in 1755. John Bullock made his will in Louisa County, Virginia in 1784 and it was probated in 1785.

Query from Bullock GenForum: Was the John Bullock who married Ann Rice a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War? I have gotten mixed signals on this. A John Bullock was a Sergeant and his widow made a claim for time he was a prisoner of the British. I would like more information on him. I would also appreciate any information on Ann Rice. I have a newspaper story to the effect that she lived to a ripe old age. I am pleased to share information with either or both of you. Bob Bullock Bull1@mis.net

In OLD HOMES PLACES IN LOUISA CO., VA, the following entries appears on p. 82:
"Located off Route 652 near the waters of the North Anna River, Laurel Hill was for many years the home of the Garland family. The house stands on 277 acres of land which Robert Garland, Sr., deeded to his son, Robert, Jr., in 1798.

In 1795 Robert Garland, Jr., married Elizabeth Bullock, daughter of John and Ann Rice Bullock of White Hall, and they made their home at Laurel Hill."

On p. 106: " This 18th-century home, originally called White Plains is located off Route 716 near the waters of Little River. In 1723 Edward Bullock of Hanover Co., patented 400 acres of land between Lickinghole Creek and Little River, and in 1751 he purchased an adjoining 104 acres of land from James Nuckolls. Edward devised this property in 1756 to two of his sons, John and James, with the former receiving the 250-acre White Hall tract.

John Bullock may already have been residing at White Hall prior to his father's death, as he married Ann Rice in Louisa County in 1755. He certainly was living there by 1759, and in 1775 he served on the county's second Committee of Safety. Although he willed White Hall in 1785 to his son, David, John's widow, Ann, continued to reside there with their three unmarried daughters, Mary, Rebecca, and Nancy. After this mother's death David allowed his sisters to remain at the home, later deeding it to them.

When Nancy Bullock died in 1855, her sisters having predeceased her, White Hall went to her nieces, Nancy, Clara, Amanda Melvina, and Rebecca Catherine Garland of Laurel Hill. The Garland sisters, the last of whom died in 1886, were the most recent residence of the old home.

Clark, Robert (b. 13 JUN 1738, d. 10 APR 1810)
Note: There is a great deal of discrepancy regarding the children of Patterson, and in fact regarding Patterson's date of birth and parents. A good deal more research is necessary to prove this part of the line.

Birth: 13 JUN 1738 in Louisa Co., VA Some researchers give birth as: 15 OCT 1734 in Virginia

Death: 10 APR 1810 in Clark Co., Ky
Note: Robert and Susan moved to Bedford Co., VA in 1765, removed to KY 1779 and settled near the Kentucky River in Clark Co., KY.

From records of Capt. Robert G. Nicol, USN (Ret.) captnicol@comcast.net
Ruth Clark Dann, a descendant provides the following:

"Robert Clark Sr. was born June 13, 1738 in Louisa Co. (now Albemarle), Virginia. He was married in Albemarle Co. to Susannah Henderson, daughter of John and Frances (Goode) Henderson. He sold his property on Ivy Creek in Albemarle Co. in 1766 and moved to Bedford Co. (now Campbell), and in 1779 moved to Kentucky, settling on the Kentucky River in the Bush Settlement (now Clark Co.), Kentucky near the present site of the Old Providence Church, where he raised his family.

Robert Clark Sr. had a son, Robert. Jr. born in Bedford Co. (now Campbell Co.) Virginia. He married in 1791 to Elizabeth Shackelford.

We believe that we are descended down to Robert Sr. from Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnston, then Micajah Clark and Judith Adams.

I am descended from Robert Clark through his son William P. Clark and Elizabeth Allen or Judith Cheadle. Then down to his son William P. Clark and Elizabeth Ann Walton Bush, who were the parents of my grandfather, William Pennington Clark and Ellen May Glasspoole. Their son Percy Martin Clark was my father.

Robert and Susannah's children are:

Micajah - born 1765 - died Oct. 1816
Elizabeth - born 1766
Christopher (Christian) - born Sept, 5, 1768
Robert Jr. - born 1769

Bullock, Edward (b. 6 JUN 1768, d. 1832)
Note: In 1794 Acts of 3rd Gen. Assembly we find 8 Dec 1795 Authorized James Morrison, John Fowler, William Murray, Edmund Bullock, Robert Megowan, Hugh M'Ilvain, Alexander M'Gregor to raise money by lottery for use of Lexington lodge of Free Masons #25.

The town of Perryville is today situated over three counties: Hardin, Hart and Boyle. Boyle was formed in 1842 from Mercer and Lincoln Counties. Hardin was formed in 1792 from Nelson Co. Hart was 1819 from Barren, Hardin and Green Counties. This presents quite a problem in trying to determine which county Edward was living in at the time of his children's births. Obviously it is possible that he could have been in Mercer, Barren, Green and Hardin and never have left the area.

From an article History of Perryville KY:
"Prospering as a farming community for decades, shortly after the War of 1812 two men named Edward Bullock and William Hall organized plans to build a village along the river, mere yards from the spot of the original fort. Bullock and Hall decided to name the village Perryville in honor of Commodore Oliver H. Perry, hero of the naval battle on Lake Erie. The Indians had long been driven out by previous settlers, it would be another 50 years until the hardship of warfare again fell upon the town's inhabitants.

In the late 1830s, Bullock and Hall's dreams came to fruition. A line of buildings, built next to the green Chaplin River, formed the basis of the village of Perryville. Now called "Merchants' Row," these buildings still stand today and are occupied by merchants selling their wares. The vision of Edward Bullock and William Hall still remains strong for the modern-day inhabitants of Perryville."

If we look at migration of the family for a minute I believe that of all the children of Edward (b 1670) and Sara Unknown, Patterson is the only one who left VA for KY, and it was very late in his life. He traveled with several of his children first to Bedford Co VA, and then on to KY. We can tell this from the marriages of his children and the births of his grandchildren. He died in 1804 having arrived in Winchester KY. There is quite a bit written about the founding of the city of Winchester, and the role of several of Patterson's children, however, it does not seem that they appear on the Census in 1790. Patterson's brother, Richard Henry and his wife Anna Henley migrated to North Carolina along with his children. Of the children of Edward (b 1703) and Ann Anderson, we know that James and his wife, Agnes Wingfield, moved to Kentucky, and Mary with her spouse Hezekiah Rice; Christine and her spouse John Dalby, and Micajah with his wife Frances/Susannah Pryor all migrated to North Carolina. While other sons of Edward (b 1703) remained in Virginia, their children traveled forth --
It appears that John and Ann Rice Bullock remained in Virginia. However, their son John died in Missouri, Rice Bullock found his way to Kentucky, and on to the Illinois Territory, Robert migrated with his family to Kentucky as did Lewis and Edward. In fact, I believe that all of the sons of John did indeed migrate, leaving the Virginia property to the unmarried daughters. The genealogy gets more confusing because several of the other lines of Bullocks (many distant cousins) also made the migration to Kentucky, some settling in other counties, but some settling quite nearby.

The Perryville reference above certainly suggests that our Edward Bullock had migrated to KY before 1790. He does not appear on the tax list for 1788. However, there is an Edmund Bullock in Fayette Co enumerated on 11 Jan 1790. A Tax List for Clark Co, KY in 1792 lists an Edward Bullock and a David Bullock. We know that Edmund P. Bullock, son of Edward Bullock and Agnes Wingfield had migrated to Jefferson Co, KY by 1799 when he married Elizabeth Fontaine. Since he was born abt 1763 he could have owned property and have been listed in 1788 and 1792. His brother Garland also appears on the 1790 list, although he did not marry until 1794.
In Green Co., Ky. Marriages 1793-1836 Book B Edward Bullock gives consent for marriage of Benjamin G. BURKS to, Susan WINN, 23 Dec 1823, doesn't say how he's related, but my guess is this is a daughter of Mildred Bullock Winn, dau of James Bullock, deceased at this time.

1800 KY Tax lists show an Edmund in Fayette Co and an Edward in Madison Co.
In 1810 our Edward would be abt 47 and Edmund P. (son of Edward and Agnes) would be abt 32.
1810 KY Census Fayette Co lists Edmund Bullock - 2m under 10; 1m 27-45; 1f 11-16;
1810 KY Census Green Co lists Edward Bullock - 2m under 10; 2m 17-26; 2m 27-46; 3f under 10; 2f 11-16; 1f 26-45;
In 1820 in becomes clear that Edmund is definitely the son of Edward and Agnes who settled in Lexington where he became a very influencial political figure.
1820 Fayette Co, City of Lexington lists Edmund Bullock - 1m 11-16; 1m over 45; 2f 17-26
And our Edward is now in Perryville
1820 Mercer Co, City of Perryville lists Maj. Edward Bullock - 1m under 10; 2m 11-16; 1m 19-26; 1m over 45; 2f under 10; 1f 11-16; 1f 27-45
1830 Barren Co, Unknown Twp lists Edward Bullock - 1m 29-30; 1m 61-70; 2f 11-15; 1f 61-70
By 1840, Edward is deceased, and I believe Hannah is living with her daughter Judith Campbell and Thomas Moss where there are definitely a few extra family members listed.
1840 KY Census Green Co, Greensburgh lists Thomas S.S.Moss - 1m under 5; 2m 11-15; 2m 16-20; 1m 21-30; 1m 31-40; 1m 51-60; 1f under 5; 2f 6-10; 1f 11-15; 1f 16-20; 2f 31-40; 1f 60-70
