Note: Paul Harrelson (Harralson - Haralson - Harraldson) is believed to have emigrated to Virginia from Denmark, through Holland, as early as 1679, at which time Eliza Harralson married Frances Dodson (on Feb 5) in Middlesex County, VA. - One story handed down thru the years says they arrived at the port of Urbanna, in Middlesex County, VA in the 1670's. Elizabeth (Eliza) could have been Paul's sister. About that time, a new wave of emigration started. Prior to that time the Dutch and English had "controlled" emigration to the "new world" (since the settlements were their colonies). This could explain why a citizen/resident of Denmark went to Holland to emigrate to VA. Another possible explanation is the desire of the immigrants to escape religious persecution in (largely) Catholic Europe. The new wave of colonists were primarily protestants, and settled in the middle and southern colonies.

The first mention of Paul in America is a record of his ownership (on 3 December 1692) of 225 acres of land which he had purchased earlier from George & Ann Marr. He also owned a 135 acre parcel in the same area.

The record of Paul's petition to the Council of Colonial Virginia for his naturalization on Tuesday, March 23, 1702, appears on page 367, of volume 1, of the Council's legislative journals.

There is a record of Paul paying taxes on the 360 acres of land lying in St. Peters and St. Pauls counties in 1704. His will dated 1718, was proved on 5 April 1734, and names his wife and children.

The English Church was, by law, the church of Virginia, Maryland, and the Carolinas. Paul and his family attended church at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Hanover County, VA. The foundation of that church can be found in the woods a short distance west of Hanover, VA. It is believed Paul married Rebekkah (Rebecca) Burgess in that church.
