Hubbard, Moses (b. BET 1771 & 1774, d. Abt 1841)
Note: *** Moses Hubbard Sr. was named in an 1832 land transaction as heir to Thomas Hubbard. He is first found in the Ashe Co. NC census in 1800. By 1810 he has moved to Clay Co. KY where he is found in census and tax records until 1829. In 1830, he acquired land in Knox Co. KY and is listed there in 1830 and 1840 census returns.

Moses and James Hubbard were the first Hubbards to settle in Clay Co. KY where James shows up on the 1809 tax list and both in the 1810 census. There were also families living in both Clay Co. KY and Knox Co. KY whose last name was Hibbard. John Hibbard was the census taker one year so we know that the spelling was correct and that these were two different surnames.

*** These are the marriages for which I have a record between 1810 and 1820. There is one less female in Moses' household in 1820. John & Mary Henson are living next to William in 1820 so it is likely she is his daughter. Solomon is found later in Knox Co. KY census with Moses. Lewis and Susan Jackson remained in Clay Co. KY when Moses moved and is involved in a land transaction with William so Susan may be daughter to William. By process of elimination, this leaves Anne as Moses daugher. I have not been able to find further record of William Geaslin to confirm this.

*** Curious record - sounds like there is a story here
1818 August. Commonwealth vs Moses Hubbard - Vagrancy - This day came Moses Hubbard before the court in ursuance to his obligation executed to the Commonwealth Conditioned for his appearance, and Whereupon came a Jury vis Edward Tugman, Brice Burns, Isaac McCollum, Pleasant Wilson, Bartlet Rogers, Thomas Johnston, Philip Wilson, Thomas Tuttle, Felix Gilbert, Daniel McCollum, John Jones, and Washington W. Woodson Who being elected tried and sworn well and truly to enquired between the Commonwelth and Moses Hubbard upon their Oath returned the following verdict. We of the Jury find for the defendant. It is therefore considered by the court that the defendant be discharged and go home in mercy. Absent: John H. Slaughter [Clay Co. KY Order Book B]

*** In 1820, I suspect that Solomon and his new wife, Polly Jackson are living with Moses as they just married in March of that year and there was no decrease in the number of males in the over 10 age groups. There was a net decrease of one female, perhaps Anne.

*** In 1840, there is one less male and three fewer females living with Moses in the over 10 age groups. Solomon must have died before 1840 as Polly is listed in the census. Isham is not listed so may be living with Moses? Also, given the age of Moses' wife, the younger children living with him are probably grandchildren.

Hubbard, Benjamin (b. 1768, d. 1850/1851)
Note: *** Thomas Sr's wife is listed by some researchers as Hollingsworth but I do not have a source for the the name. The land acquired by Thomas Hubbard in 1821 is sold by his heirs to Benjamin Hubbard in 1832. He appears on tax lists until 1822 when a Frankey Hubbard (female) is listed. This is possibly his wife and the older female who is living with Benjamin Hubbard in 1830.

1822 Clay Co. KY Tax List
Jas. Hubbard
Benjamin Hubbard
Frankey Hubbard
Moses Hubbard
Thomas Hubbard
Mathias? Hubbard (probably Matthew)

*** Frankey is possibly a second wife to Thomas Sr. as the age of the female listed in the 1800 Ashe Co. NC census is 27-45 or born 1755-1773. In the 1810 Madison Co. KY census, the age was over 45 or born before 1765. She was therefore born 1755-1765 and would have been too young to have been mother to Moses who was born 1861-1864. However, the older female in Benjamin's home in 1830 is listed as age 80-89 or born 1841-1850 and she would have been old enough to have been Moses' mother. Ages seem to vary quite a bit from census to census. Middle age people often report younger ages and older ones age much faster than 10 years between census years. We really need a marriage reference to lock this down but I suspect from the age difference between Moses and his brothers that Moses was a son from an earlier marriage.

*** Benjamin originally acquired land 1823 in Knox Co. KY but was back in Clay Co. KY by the 1830 census. I suspect he was living on his father's land after Thomas Sr's death and his brothers sold him their parts when their mother died 1831-1832.

*** Benjamin Hubbard is found with Thomas Sr. and his sons in Ashe Co. NC and is likely another son to Thomas. In 1832 it appears that his brothers sold to him their parts of the land inherited from Thomas Sr. It also looks like six of his daughters married between 1820 and 1830 as only one is listed in 1830.

The Hubbard message board lists Randolph, Edmund, Jesse and Robert as sons of Thomas.
