Boling, Jesse Sr (b. 1 JUN 1758, d. 15 AUG 1841)

Note: FROM THE BOOK, PERRY COUNTY, KENTUCKY, A HISTORY, BY HAZARD CHAPTER D.A.R.
PUBLISHED IN 1953:

"Reverand Jesse Bowling, of English ancestry, was born at Hillsboro, N.C. in 1759. He was in the battle of Cowpens during the American Revolution. He married Mary Pennington of Lee County, Virginia and came to Clay County, Kentucky, in 1810, settling on the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. This section was later Perry County, now Leslie".

Mention is made of all the children of this couple, one of them being
Jesse Jr. All it says about him is that he married a Lewis for his second wife, indicating he lost his first wife, (Nancy Dewese).

The above is the father of our Jesse Bowling Jr.

Occupation: Baptist Minister, Constable, Surveyor, County Judge
Education: Rev. War Vet.
Religion: Old Stony Creek Church, Ft. Blackmore, VA

Jessee Bolling and Micajah Pennington were both names that appeared on 1787 tax list "A", Montgomery Co., VA (Schreiner-Yantis 1:428, 422). Schreiner-Yantis' Montgomery County, Virginia - Circa 1790, p. 78, indicates that Jesse Bowling had removed to NC before the tax could be collected. 1790 census, Wilkes Co., NC, p. 123 col. 1, Tenth Company: Micajah Piniton, Ben Pinniton, Elijah Piniton; Jesse Bolin, 1 fwm over 21; 3 fwm under 21; 3 fwf. moved c. 1795 to Hawkins Co., TN. Hawkins Co., TN: Jesse Bolling, William Bolling, Levi Bolling.

The following dates have also been shown by some researchers: Birth: 22 May 1758 in Hillsboro, Wilkes Co., NC Death: 10 Mar 1841 in Quicksand Creek, Breathitt Co., KY

Jesse was known to have served in 1780 in the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of the Cowpens
Jesse enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1780, Wilkes Co., NC. He marched to Salisbury and was employed in guarding British and Tory prisoners. He marched with the prisoners from Salisbury line to Virginia with the British in pursuit. Served three months, discharged. Spring of 1781, re enlisted and marched from Wilkes Co. NC down the Yadkin River to trading ford and used to guard against an invasion by the British. July or August 1781, he again re enlisted in Grayson Co. VA as a light horse soldier. Marched to NC where he guarded a town against the British. (Noted by Ruth Lewis, her great grandfather).

Baptism: Abt. 1793 Rev. Andrew Baker baptized Jesse at Blackwater Church, now Hawkins Co., TN.

Occupation: Jesse became a Baptist minister in Wise Co., VA, "Elder" comes from the title given by the Church. Their belief "No mortal man" should be addresses as Rev., therefor, Elder Jesse. Abt. 1800 he served as Pastor of the Old Stony Creek Church @ Fort Blackmore, VA. (Scott Co., now).

Bef. 1793 Jesse lived in NC, and in 1795 may have been in Lee Co, VA. In 1793 he moved to Hawkins Co., Tennessee, and in 1810 he moved to Kentucky & settled in Clay Co. (Middle Fork of the Kentucky River)
In 1838 he moved to Quicksand Creek where he still lived when he died.

Burial: Small graveyard at mouth of Meatscaffold Creek, on Quicksand.

I found this information in one of the Ancestral News in Clay Co., Ky Check this out again for exact information.

Jesse and Mary Pennington This report says Elijah is their 8th child.

From Book "The Pochahantas Connection" by Willas W. Lake, says Jesse moved to Hawkins Co., Tennessee about 1794 was baptized there and his daughter Betsy (who married Abel III) was born there. William and Levi Bolling lived near him in Hawkins County, according to Homer Ledford's records. Some of the Bollings stayed there and intermarried with the mysterious Melungeon tribe. Jesse moved back to Lee County, VA. and in 1805 bought land there. William Pennington was a witness to the deed. Soon thereafter Jesse moved to Knox County, KY. (he was on the 1808 Tax list and Benjamin was on the 1800 tax list there). In 1810 Jesse and Mary moved to the Red Bird section of Clay County (later Perry County). William, Isham and John Bolling were in Clay County (then part of Madison County) in 1803.

Jesse was the most prominent of the Bollings in eastern Kentucky, not only because he was a minister but also because he was the first head of the Perry County Court. In 1830 Jesse and John, Sr. were the oldest Bollings in Perry County. Jesse's sons Justice, William, John and Elijah lived there and so did his daughters Hannah and Rachel. John's sons William and Levi lived there. There were also Bollings named Joseph, Christopher, Isham and two other Johns, whose parents I cannot identify. Ephraim and Levi Pennington lived there. The son of Abel III, Jesse's grandson, who was killed at Vicksburg was probably named for this Levi. I think it is almost certain that in this thinly populated county, all of the Bollings and Penningtons knew each other and their family relationships.

The closest thing to documentary evidence of Jesse being a son of Benjamin, 1734 is a family bible record in the possession of Mary Johnson Roland (now deceased) of Lexington, KY, which states that Jesse was a son of Benjamin. However, this entry was made after Jesse's death by Mrs. Roland's mother, who was a granddaughter of Jesse through his son Jesse, Jr.

There is a body of circumstantial evidence supporting the near unanimous belief that Jesse was Benjamin's son. During the years preceding and following Jesse's birth in Orange Co. in 1758 several Bollings, including a Benjamin, lived there. In May 1753 this Benjamin was sued in the Orange County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions (PQS) by Michael Synnat, in June 1753 he was sued by Samuel Benton and in February 1761 he was sued by Hercules Ogle. James Bolling and John Bolling were mentioned in PQS records of 1762 and 1763. Jesse had two uncles and two older brothers with those names. There could have been two sets of Bollings in Orange County named Benjamin, James and John, but I (Willis Lake) doubt it. Records of Benjamin, 1734, state that he moved to North Carolina, lived there many years and then moved back to Virginia.
