Revolutionary Patriot for road duty to lay out road from Deep ford on Reddies River to Benejah Pennington's mill (accepted DAR) Wilkes, NC

Abel Pennington is first known to be in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1778. Recorded a mark of crop in left ear and swallow fork in right and a brand of A.P.. Four of his children were b. in South Carolina. When he was unable to get a deed for the property he had lived on and improved, he removed his family to Georgia. He and his sons bought and sold property and progressed across Georgia into Mississippi Territory and then on to Alabama. His will in Tuscaloosa is dated Feb 1819, with his son Abel as executor. This son is well documented in the Alabama area as late as 1838. Besides being a sheriff, he continued to run the mill his father had built. Wilkes Co, NC Land of Abel Pennington Mar 3 1779 - north fork on the New River at the mouth of Horse Creek.

SC surveyed July 1784 and granted June 21, 1785 two parcels (120 acres and 240 acres) on the South Fork of the Saluda River which appear to be on opposite sides (present day Pickens and Greenville Cos)

Wilkes Co, GA Jan 25 1788 Abel buys 250 acres in Cedar Creek from Mary Eades. On May 20, 1789 Abel and wife Sarah sell 240 acres on both sides of Cedar Creek to Jacob Burton. He sold the remaining 10 acres to Jones Broach previously.

In 1799 land grants on New River in Wilkes (Ashe) County were made out to Micajah, William, Levi (Group 6), Ephraim (5, 6, or 7), Elisha, Edward, Elijah and Abel (Group 11).
Abel of Group 11 had lived in Ashe County, NC from 1779 until 1785 when he moved to SC, on to GA in 1788, and on to MS in 1812, leaving descendants behind him in most places. He appears to be a younger brother of Micajah (1743). His sons Abel and William moved back toward the main stream of Penningtons and were in Clay County, KY in 1819. Son John L. moved to Letcher County, KY in the early 1800’s where he raised a family. His early children were born in SC.
