Residence: BEF. 1664 Sudbury, then moved to Marlboro
Will: 11 NOV 1681 proved Apr. 4, 1682, gave to sons Thos., Peter, Nathaniel & Ephraim, residue to wife, Mary
ELEC: General court representative

He and Mary King resided in 1664 at Marlborough, MA, The Boston Gazette, of 26 December 1768, communicates the subject of the longevity of Thomas' children. Article contains errors regarding the age of Thomas. Follow up article: Middlesex News Extra, Jun 8-14, 1984. Thomas was a proprietor.

Thomas RICE, son of Deacon Edmund RICE, the founder, was born about 1622, in Buckinghamshire, England, and resided at Sudbury and Marlboro, Mass., settling in the latter town about 1664, and there died Nov. 16, 1681. He married, Mary KING, who bore him 9 sons and 4 daughters, Ephrahim being the 7th child; Jonas, "The father of Worcester", being the 11th child.
Thomas RICE, son of Ephrahim RICE, was born March 21, 1701, died at Worcester, MA, Dec. 17, 1785. He married (1st), Mary HALL, who died at Worcester, MA, Sept. 8, 1749. He married (2nd) Judith STEARNS, the mother of Sarah RICE, wife of William TROWBRIDGE.

GenForum Notes:
My ancestors are Deacon Edmond RICE's sons, Henry RICE b. 1617 and Samuel RICE b. 1634 both in Stanstead, Suffolk, England. Jan

In Orange Co., Va. Will Book 2, 1744-1778, abstracted and compiled by John Frederick Dorman, p.77, is this listing:

p.383, (Henry) Rice, Settlement of Estate. Each heir received
L8.15.0 paid by Jos. Smith.
29 Feb 1757 William Rice
8 Oct 1762 Margaret Shackleford
8 Oct 1762 Fisher Rice
8 Oct 1762 Micheal Rice
14 July 1759 Ann Rice
10 Dec 1764 Sarah Finnell
10 Oct 1766 Mildred Rice
Aaron Rice
25 Sept. 1767. Returned and sworn to by Samuel Rice.

My question is this, What is Margaret (Rice) Shackleford's husband's first name? There are two Henry Shacklefords born in Orange Co., Va. abt 1732. One Henry married a Mary? and went to Ky.
The Henry Shackleford (b. abt. 1732) that I am interested in marr.? abt 1760? and by 1790 was in Elbert Co., Ga. He died in 1818-19 in Elbert Co.,Ga. His will doesn't mention a wife.

Anyone know if this Margaret (Rice) Shackleford is Henry's wife?

There are a couple of typographical errors here that should be noted. The christening date of Lydia, daughter of Edmund & Thomasina (Frost) Rice, is off by a hundred years. Also, at the beginning where "Stamstead" is mentioned, that should be "Stanstead." Finally, while "Berkhamstead" is pronounced "Barkhamstead," the standard spelling of this place is with an "e," just as "Hertford" is pronounced "Hartford."

I have been informed that the wife of John Moore (mother of Henry Rice's wife Elizabeth Moore) was not Elizabeth Whale, but rather Elizabeth Rice. (See Suzette Thompson's post on the Moore Genforum.) I have not had a chance to verify this yet. Reportedly the confusion stems from the fact that the grandmother (also named Elizabeth) married Philemon Whale (who died in 1675 in Sudbury) as her second husband. Thus, there evidently was an Elizabeth Frost in this family, but she was John Moore's mother in law rather than his wife. To add to the confusion, I am told that this Elizabeth's first husband was Henry Rice, though obviously not the same person as her granddaughter's husband of the same name.

If the Rev. David Rice's fragmentary memoir is accurate in saying that Thomas Rice went to England(?) in connection with an inheritance, we should be able to look at English records to find out what inheritance. Unfortunately, it may well be an Irish inheritance and most of the Irish records were burned in 1921. Irish possibilities include the estates of Sir Stephen Rice (1637-1715) -- but his son Edward (b. 1663) turned Anglican and saved the estates -- perhaps the Egmont estates if this Thomas Rice is related to the Thomas Rice who was Egmont's Steward ca 1702-3 -- and possibly estates in question in Hamond v. Rice (Ireland 1713 PRO C/3/285/28, Huntingdon 1712 PRO C/10/428/52, 1715 PRO C/12/1533/14), in Asgill v. Rice (1723/4/5 PRO C/608/1) in Rice v. Browne (Geo I PRO C/11/1178/24), and in Rice v. O'Hara (Geo I PRO C11/1232/37). The references are to the MS Court of Chancery documents in the PRO (Public Record Office) in Kew. Of course, there were 17th-century Rice families in Stepney and Shoreditch (Middlesex) and London, and some of the Irish Rices wound up in London. Patrick Rice of the Inner Temple died near Tunbridge Wells, in Kent, 11 May 1687 (Prerogative Ct of Canterbury, PROB 4/3940 in PRO). Also, several Rices are recorded in the Canterbury PROB as having died "beyond the seas" -- notably Richard Rice of Shoreditch 14 Apr 1687 (PROB 4/1733), Henry Rice of Stepney 3 Sept 1672 (PROB 4/16217) and George Rice of Bermondsey 26 Jun 1679 (PROB 4/21513). Also several died at sea, John Rice of Stepney 16 Mar 1678 (PROB 4/15649), John Rice of Bermondsey 23 Jun 1691 (PROB 4/17130), James Rice of Kent 28 Apr 1674 (PROB 4/21142) -- and note also the deaths of Edward Rice of Southwark 1688 (PROB 5/2295), Thomas Rice of St Michael Coventry (clothier) on 25 Feb 1662 (PROB 4/11135), Thomas Rice of Whitechapel (Middlesex) 4 Nov 1668 (PROB 4/12187), and Richard Rice of St Alban's London (at Winchfield in Hants) 27 Aug 1662 (PROB 4/18655). Just a few more notes to confuse or enliven the search for Thomas Rice of VA -- Jared Lobdell
