Bullock, Hugh (b. Abt 1568, d. 2 NOV 1650)
Note: This particular Bullock family has roots in All Hallows, Barking, County Essex. The oldest proven ancestor is Capt. Hugh Bullock, who owned a fleet of ships and did much business between England and the very earliest Virginia colonies. Hugh Bullock was a planter, merchant councilor and man of considerable importance. The name of one of his ships in 1628 was the "Endeavor." While he owned property in Virginia, Hugh did not remain there permanently. He did settle for a while in York Co., Virginia, where he was a Burgess and member of the Assembly in 1631/34. In 1634, he took out a patent for 2550 acres on the Pocoson River. In 1637, he seems to be back in London, where he deeds his Virginia property to his son William, with a proviso that some income be sent to him and his wife, should she outlive him. In addition to William, some believe that Hugh also had sons Richard, James, and Thomas. His will is abstracted in *The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography*, Vol. XVIII, No. 3. He was "72 years of age and dim sighted." It mentions property at Dungeonesse Lights, his son William, grandchildren Frances, daughter of William, and Robert, son of son William. While several non-related bequests were given, there was no mention of other children or grandchildren, and his wife must have predeceased him, since no mention is made of her.

Hugh Bullocke of London, Gent. All Hallows Barking 72 years of age and dim sighted. I have the half of Dungeonesse lights which I purchased from Sir Francis Howard. The half of which half I sold to Andrew Burrel which half was purchased from him by my son William Bullocke. My son married William Lamply's daughter and purchased William Bin's part in the other half and my son William at his going into Virginia let his part for 1 20 per annum during term of the patent which has 17 years to run. To Mary Bennett, now living in London, 1 4 per annum during the patent. To Ellinor, daughter of my sister Ann Mason, 3 per annum during patent. To Mary Rose, widow, living in Ratcliffe, 40s per annum. To Bernard Smith, my deputy in Custom House, 3 per annum during patent. My estate in Virginia amounting to 100 per annum left me there 10 years past to my sun William and his son Robert. Executors: John Limbry Esq. And Barnard Smith. Overseer: Master of the Trinity House for the time being. To Mary Snow, Wife of Nicholas Snow, 7s yearly; to Elizabeth her sister 7s yearly Witnesses: William Walket, James Turner, Benjamine Sheppard Scr. Proved by Samual Burrell, principal creditor.

Notes on will: All Hallows Barking is a parish in London. Also known as All Hallows Barking by the Tower, it was damaged in a fire in 1666 and rebuilt later that century. The Dungeonesse or Dungeness Lights referred to in his will are lighthouses. As best as I can determine the lights were near those of North and South Foreland in the County of Kent, but I have yet to be able to determine their exact locations. There is a reference that the income due the North and South Foreland Lights was often paid in error to the Bullocks.

Hugh made frequent trips to England from Virginia to attend to his business affairs. He was present at the meetings of the Council in 1632, 1633, and 1634. In 1637 he was one of the members the king directed should be retained, but Hugh declined due to his age and interest in England, since we know he died in England.

Best known arms of Bullock Family Follows: Arms: Argent, a chevron gules, between three bulls heads, or. Crest: Five battle axes, blades sable, staffs, or ribbonned gules. Motto: Nil conscire sibi, meaning "To be conscious of no fault."

Capt. Hugh Bullock was granted 2550 acres in what became York County, Virginia, in 1634. He moved to Virginia where he lived for a few years, during which time he was appointed to the council of Virginia.3 By the summer of 1637 he had returned to London where on July 8 he deeded he Virginia property to his son William.4 Capt. Hugh Bullock and his wife Mary had four sons: William, James, Richard, and Thomas.

There is recorded in York County a deed dated July 8th, 1637, from Hugh Bullock, of London, gentlemen, to his son, William Bullock, of London, gentlemen, conveying his corn-mill, saw-mill, and plantation in Virginia. Hugh Bullock's wife, Mary is mentioned. In General Court Records, April, 1672, is entry of a suit by Robert Bullock, son and heir of William Bullock, who was son and heir of Hugh Bullock, vs Colonel Peter Jenings, guardian of John Matthews, orphan of Colonel Matthews, deceased, in regard to a parcel of land in Warwick County, containing 5,500 acres. There can hardly be a doubt that William Bullock here mentioned was the person who wrote the well-known tract on Virginia. He states that both his father and himself had owned land here

Capt. Hugh's plantation on the Back River in York County is now part of Langley Air Force Base.

Bullock, William (b. 1605, d. 16 MAY 1650)
Note: William (1584-1650) was called "the Pamphleteer". In 1624 he was living in Virginia. His will was probated on 16 May 1650. Another record lists his wife as Elizabeth. [Broderbund WFT Vol. 7, Ed. 1, Tree #3244, Date of Import: Sep 22, 1998]

William wrote his will in County Essex, England, which states, "William Bullocke, Gentleman , of Essex, being bound for Virginia in the parts beyond the seas." His will was not proved until 16 May 1650, which may have been many years later than it was written. It mentions wife Elizabeth, son Robert, and daughter Frances. William may have first come to Virginia as early as 1624 aboard the "Jonathan," and settled in Warwick County. A 1624 census shows him staying at "ye plantation over against James Citties over the river." He traveled back and forth between London and Virginia, as his father did. In 1637 his father deeded "William Bullock, of London, Gentleman" his corn mill, saw mill, plantation, and fleet of ships in Virginia. William may have had a son William alive in 1637, but he was not mentioned again in the 1649 will of his grandfather, only Robert and Frances. There are transportation records for William in 1638, so he probably returned to Virginia then permanently. The wording of his father's will in 1649 seems to indicate that William had removed to the lands deeded him a t least ten years earlier. In 1649, William wrote a pamphlet entitled "Virginia ImPartially Examined, Etc." which is abstracted in the *Cyclopedia of Virginia Biography*, Vol. I, page 102.

Bullock, Robert (b. 1625, d. Aft 1671)
Note: Individual:
In 1671, Robert was living in Warwick Co., VA, where he brought suit against a Col. Jennings over title to 5,000 acres of land in Warwick Co., which he was awarded by the courts. This suit identifies him as "son and heir of William Bullock, who was son and heir of Hugh Bullock,". He left no will, but estate settlement records show there was one son, Richard Bullock of New Kent Co., VA.

Note: From Colonial Granville County and its People Loose Leaves from "The Lost Tribes of North Carolina" by Worth S. Ray P. 279:20. Richard Bullock, of New Kent County, Virginia, is known on the records of St. Peter's Parish as Richard Bullock, Sr. After his death in 1702, his son Richard Bullock, Jr. became Richard Bullock, Sr. Richard Bullock, Sr. and Richard Bullock, Jr. were processioners in St. Peter's Parish on May 4, 1689 (St. Peter's Parish Register by Chamberlayne, P.21). Richard Bullock, Jr. would not have been named a processioner unless he was a grown man at the time (1689), hence the Junior Richard was born around 1670, when his grandfather had a suit in Warwick against judge Peter Jennings, over his patrimony.

Bullock, Robert* (b. 21 FEB 1762/1764, d. Abt 1862)
Note: 1820 KY Census Mason Co Lists Robert Bullock - 1m 16-18; 1m 19-26; 1m over 45; 1f under 10; 1f 11-16; 1f 26-45.
In 1830 there are no listings for Robert Bullock in KY. He could have either migrated or is deceased or perhaps living in the household of one of his children. I suspect however that Agnes was called Mary because we find a listing for a Mrs. Mary Bullock in Mason Co that would be consistent with Waller, Edward and Ann still at home, and there are separate listings for the households of David R and James W. 1830 KY Census Mason Co lists Mrs. Mary Bullock - 1m 16-20; 1m 20-30; 1f 11-15; 1f 51-60
