Anne (Clement) Pigg [856.5]

Anne Clement, the daughter of William Clement Sr., married Capt. John Pigg, the son of Paul Pigg and his wife, Elizabeth. John Pigg was born in King William County around 1720. He and his father were living above Flat Creek in Amelia County in 1737. This was in the same tax district where William Clements, Anne’s father, was living. Further, when Francis Clement sold 300 acres of land to William Clement in 1760, the deed described it as next to John Pigg and William Clements.
Paul Pigg moved to Halifax County about 1756. That same year, while still living in Amelia County, John Pigg obtained a patent for 496 acres of land in Halifax County in two transactions. On 23 March 1762, he acquired 390 more acres there. John was still living in Amelia County when he sold 100 acres in Raleigh Parish on the south side of the Appomattox River to Henry Cox of Cumberland County 22 March 1763 for £124. Ann, wife of John Pigg relinquished her dower right.
We presume soon after the above land transactions, John and Anne Pigg moved to Halifax County to be near his father, who was then very old. In 1767 they were living in Pittsylvania County that they created from Halifax County. Paul died about 1780 and Paul’s will was the first on record in the Pittsylvania County clerk’s office.
On 10 June 1767, just ten days after they formed Pittsylvania County, John Pigg was listed by Theophilus Lacy with five slaves.
John Pigg was a vestryman and captain of the local militia. They named Pigg River for him. In May 1776 the Committee of Safety of Pittsylvania County called him in for “drinking and making use of in his family the detestable East Indian tea.” Such action was considered a virtual act of treason. John refused to be summoned before the Committee and replied that “he would do so as he pleased.” His name was published in the Virginia Gazette for being “inimical to the cause.”
John Pigg died in Pittsylvania County (will dated 10 Oct. 1782 , recorded 21 Feb. 1785).
Children of John and Anne (Clement) Pigg:
Hezekiah Ford Pigg [856.5.1] was named “Hezekiah Ford” for the husband of Elizabeth Clement [856.4], the sister of Ann Clement [856.5]. When his father died, he inherited the mill tract, his two guns, a rifle, and silver buckles. Hezekiah must have added to his collection of buckles. When he died in Pittsylvania County (will dated 2 July 1784 , recorded 21 Nov. 1785) they inventoried his estate. The first item listed was “54 pr. Shoe buckles.” He also owned books at a time when books were not plentiful. His wife was named Elizabeth but we do not know her last name. They had the following children according to Hezekiah’s will. After the death of Hezekiah, Elizabeth married Adin Gray. Gray died in Pittsylvania County in 1816 (will dated 29 Jan. 1816 , recorded 19 Feb. 1816) while his wife was living.
Hezekiah Pigg [856.5.1.1] married Agnes Owen on 12 October 1785.
John Pigg [856.5.1.2] married Lucretia Payne on 28 October 1787. He married second Mary who was his wife when he wrote his will. John died in Pittsylvania County (will dated 2 Nov. 1815 , recorded 19 Feb. 1816) appointing his wife and stepfather executors. He was evidently dead by 29 February 1816 when he was “deceased” in the will of his stepfather.
Payton Pigg [856.5.1.2.1].
Clemons Pigg [856.5.1.2.2].
Hezekiah Pigg [856.5.1.2.3].
Elizabeth Pigg [856.5.1.2.4].
William Pigg [856.5.1.2.5].
John Walker Pigg [856.5.1.2.6].

From Dixon's Virginia Gazette, July 8, 1775
At a committee meeting held at Pittsylvania Court House on Wednesday, the 22nd day of May, 1775, a complaint being brought to the committee that a certain John Pigg violated the Association [for the purpose of boycotting English goods] by drinking, and making use of in his family, the detestable East India TEA, and also that he the said Pigg had taken uncommon pains in order to defeat the intention of the said Association, by exclaiming much
