On p. 482 we see: "Before me, Pelgrom Clocq, by the Right Honorable the Director-General and Council admitted a Notary Public, residing in the village of Midwout, in New Netherland, and the undernamed witnesses, appeared Fredrick Lubberts, aged 55 years, Joris Jacobsen, aged 38 years, ... all resident inhabitants of The Ferry, ... "
The document is dated 20 Feb 1664 and Joris Jacobs signed it by making his mark. (p. 483) New York City Wills, 1708-28 Page 15.--Robert Hunter, Captain-General and Governor. Whereas JORIS JACOB BOWMAN, of Breucklyn, in Kings County, died intestate, Letters of administration are granted to his son, William Bowman, and his grandson, Thomas Bowman, October 8, 1718. Additional Notes: In 1660 Joris Jacobsen obtained a grant to land in Brookliyn near the ferry. The grant referred to him as "Jooris Jacobse of Amerstrid.
The surname Bouwman or Bowman was selected after the British took over New Netherlands. In Dutch it means farmer.
