Will of John Bullock
I, John Bullock of the
County of Louisa of sound Mind and Memory do make and ordain this my last will
and Testament. In mannor and form
following to wit I give and
bequeath unto my
Son Rice Bullock one Negro fellow
named Mingo generally called little Mingo to him and his heirs.
I gave to my son David Bullock the Land I now live on and a Negro Boy
Jack to him and his heirs forever. I
give the land called the mill tract with the Mill and all the appurtenances with
a Negro boy called Martin to my son Lewis Bullock to him and his heirs forever
Fifty acres of the lower part of said land to be taken off by a north and
South line with the mill thereon my said son Lewis not to have possession of
until the death of my Wife. I give
all my Land on the western waters which I have obtained by warrants or by being
in partnership with Mr. Charles Yancy or others to my two sons Robert Bullock
and Edward Bullock and their heirs to be Equal divided between them to then hold
by them as Tenants in Common and not in Join tenancy.
I likewise give to my son Robert Bullock and his heirs one Negro boy
named Sam and top my son Edward Bullock and his heirs one Negro boy named Nelson
my will and desire is that all the expenses of surveying the lands on the
western waters which I have to my sons Robert and Edward should be paid out of
my Estate. I give to my Daughter
Elizabeth Bullock a Negro girl named Hannah to her and her heirs.
I give to my Daughter Mary Bullock a Negro girl called Dosey to her and
her heirs. I give to my Daughter
Rebeccah a Negro girl named Baby to her and her heirs.
I give to my Daughter Nancy Bullock a Negro Girl called Kate to her and
her heirs. My will and desire is
that each of my daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Rebeccah and Nancy shall be paid by
my Executors one hundred pound current money of this Commonwealth upon their
arriving their respective age of twenty-one years. My will and desire is that all the rest and residue of my
Estate not heretofore mentioned and likewise the land whereon I now live given
in a form part of this will to my son David and the fifty acres of land with the
Mill which was reserved from my Son Lewis during the life of my wife be kept
together under the directions and management of my wife for her support and the
advantage of my children during her life all which Estate not heretofore
bequeathed with all the profits arising from said Estate under the management of
my said Wife I will to be disposed of at her death and Equally divided amongst
all my children Rice, David, Robert, Lewis, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebeccah,
and Nancy. I Desire my land called
Cooks which I purchased of Cook to my Executors to be sold by them when they
think proper to raise money to pay off the legacies or part of them heretofore
given to my daughters notwithstanding the general claim in a former part of this
my will where I gave all the residue of my Estate to my wife.
My will further is that if any of the Negroes heretofore bequeathed
should die before the legatee comes of legal age or gets possession of them that
the Value of such Negro shall be made up such legatee out of my Estate by my
Executors. My desire is that if any
of my children should die before they come of lawful age or have issue such
child’s part be it real or personal should be equally divided amongst my
surviving children. My will is that
the money I now have and debts due should be put out at Interest to pay off the
legacies given to my Daughters if that should not be sufficient my desire is
that my Executors should sell any part of my Estate to raise the money so given
legacies and further I constitute and appoint my sons David Bullock, Robert
Bullock and Lewis Bullock executors to this my last will and Testament hereby
revoking all other wills or wills heretofore made and declaring this to be my
last will and testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and
affixed my seal this Twenty Seventh day of September the Year of our Lord 1784.
Memorandum that the words out the forth line to him and his heirs was
inserted before signed

At Court held for Louisa County
April 11th 1785 This
will was this day presented in open court by David Bullock, Robert Bullock,
Lewis Bullock the Executors therein named and was proved by the oaths of Richard
and William Nuckolls. Two of the
witnesses thereto and by the Court is Ordered to be recorded and the said
Executors having done what is usual in such cases having entered into and
acknowledged their bond with approved security
